FAQ About Remodeling in Wilmette

• Does a Wilmette local landmark need approval before exterior work?

Yes. Wilmette’s Historic Preservation Commission hears requests to alter properties designated as local landmarks, and the village publishes a list of its local landmarks and National Register properties. Check that list before you plan new windows, doors, or roofing for an older home.

• Are tilt-turn windows a good choice for a Wilmette home near the Lake?

Tilt-turn windows swing fully inward, so the outside of the glass can be cleaned from the room, including on upper floors. Their locking hardware runs around the whole sash and presses it against the frame for a tight seal, which matters on a house exposed to wind off Lake Michigan.

• Can masonry stain change the color of brick on a Wilmette home?

Yes. Masonry stain changes the color of existing brick and are designed to last for decades. It is an option when a red brick exterior no longer fits the windows, siding, and roof planned for the rest of the house.

• Do you install stone veneer on Wilmette homes?

Yes. HX Home Solutions manufactures its own stone veneer, which works for decorative accent walls and can be paired with new siding on the same project.

• Do you also work in Kenilworth and Winnetka?

Yes. Our crews cover Wilmette and the neighboring North Shore communities, including Kenilworth, Winnetka, Glenview, and Glencoe. See our full service area for the complete list.
